Special Education Advocacy
Professional Development, Coaching, and Mentoring
I have served over 25 years in education. It has always been my passion that every child is meaningfully included in their local school, to the extent possible, and to have access to an education that helps them to reach their potential. Families know their child best and often need assistance navigating the special education system to advocate for their child. I have experience as a general educator, special educator, professor, presenter, instructional coach, and advocate, which positions me to combine that knowledge and experience to work with families to help their child with a disability access a meaningful, appropriate education.
I am personable, seeking to ensure you are comfortable with my partnering with you to help your child receive appropriate services by listening, and providing professionally informed advice while customizing my services to meet your family’s needs.
My passion is for all students and their families to thrive in a school community where they know they are welcomed, valued, and contributing members of the school. I do this by assisting districts, schools, and teachers in the meaningful inclusion of students with disabilities in their school communities and classrooms, to the extent possible, by offering a range of services. Students deserve the best their school systems can give them. I partner with districts or schools to assist with creating inclusive environments through universal design for learning, differentiated instruction, co-teaching and collaboration, effective practices for paraeducators, high-leverage practices, and evidence-based practices.
Testimonials
Dr. Owiny’s expertise helped us get the alternative placement my daughter needed and that was denied to use the first time we asked. Once Dr. Owiny heard our story and helped us write our request to present to the IEP team, they approved the request. Dr. Owiny’s advice and support helped to make that happen.
